llms.txt Explained: What It Does, What It Doesn't, and How to Use It Well
`llms.txt` is not a magic ranking file. It is a lightweight discovery and policy signal that works best when the rest of your site is already organized and crawlable.
What llms.txt is meant to do
An `llms.txt` file gives AI systems a compact place to discover your site, understand basic usage policy, and identify the pages or sections you consider most important.
It is especially helpful when paired with obvious, durable content hubs such as documentation, resources, product pages, and archives.
What it cannot do on its own
It cannot compensate for weak content architecture, inconsistent canonicals, missing structured data, or pages that do not answer a clear query.
If the rest of the site is confusing, `llms.txt` becomes only a hint instead of a force multiplier.
How to use it well
Keep the file current, list your main content sections, link to your canonical site host, and make sure the URLs you want AI systems to trust are the same ones you use in your metadata and sitemap.
That consistency is what turns a helpful file into a reliable signal.
